A 5th metacrpal fracture is often called a boxer fracture or a broken pinky. Why? Because little fingers are susceptible to breaking when clenched fists punch hard things. The Hely & Weber TKO boxer fracture splint is a common treatment option for several reasons:
1. This finger splint is removeable. People who break their fingers punching things might have control problems. This type of patient generally doesn't do well in a hand cast - they wind up picking at the plaster and eventually removing the cast themselves. This splint gives the patient the ability to control their treatment. Patients can adjust the splint, and take it on and off when showering.
2. It is universal in size - just order right or left. An Extra Large size is available for really big hands.
3. The splint can be used on other fingers beside the 5th metacarpal. Turn the finger splint around and it can be used on the ring and middle fingers.
4. The Hely & Weber TKO is easy to clean. Just wash it in the sink and use a mild detergent, let it air dry. Have you ever smelled a plaster cast that has been worn in the summer?
