Can a neoprene sleeve help an arthritic knee?  Yes it can.  Neoprene provides warmth and compression which will increase blood flow to the knee joint.  

Should I get an arthritis knee brace with hinges?

A neeprene knee braces with hinges will provide a measure of protection and stability.  Hinges should be considered if the knee joint feels loose or gives out.

Is a neoprene sleeve like an unloader knee brace?  No it is not.  An unloader knee brace requires a prescription and will change the biomechanics of a knee joint.  A neoprene sleeve does not affect biomechanics.

The orthotic & prosthetic industry knows more about knee braces than your doctor does.  The correct knee brace must be chosen for specific knee injuries.  Is it arthritis, ligament damage, tendinitis, patellar or knee cap problems, a meniscal tear?  Pain in the knee comes in many shapes and forms.  Orthotists went to school to learn about knee braces and biomechanics.  For best results when it comes to knee pain treatment have your doctor consult with a certified orthotist.  Make sure the right knee brace is prescribed for you!

Knee Tendonitis - What Helps?

 

The patella tendon, and the quadriceps tendon are the primary tendons surrounding the knee that get strained.  Repetition such as bending and straightening your knee from jumping, running, squatting can cause patellar tendonitis.  People who have had knee surgery and rushed back to activity are also prone to knee tendonitis.  

So what to do if patella tendonitis is causing you knee pain?  Remember the tendons are inflamed so rest and bring down the swelling.  Try an ice wrap while relaxing at home.  Anti-inlammatroy medications may be prescribed by your doctor, and remember that stretching is important.  Physical therapy is certainly beneficial and sometimes electrical stimulation can help.

When you are ready to return to activity a patellar strap can help keep the inflammation down.  A patella strap is an inexpensive conservative treatment for patellar syndrome that gets great results.  It is worth trying.
