AMP1 Basketball is the first and only official stand-up basketball league for amputees. It started as many stories in our industry begin. Two amputees looking for competition and a place to play created something from nothing. Founders, Scott Odom and Tyler Hyatt took their love for the game of basketball and passion to help others and built a team. Their team of amputees now travels around the United States playing able-bodied athletes.
The AMP1 players come from all over the country. That is how our friend and local prosthetist, Marc Werner, became involved. Marc explains, "I was asked by one of my patients who is on the team to help with practices and a game when AMP1 came to Mattituck. I was excited to be part of it!"
Werner continued, "Because the team comes from all over the country their Prosthetists can't join them. I helped by making adjustments to their prosthesis, tweaking alignments and making minor repairs. I even participated in the practices when they needed a middle-aged white guy who can't jump or shoot well." Marc is being modest - he is a dunk-adelic prosthetist with mad ups and an all day wet J! POW!
Marc is owner of Long Island O&P based in West Babylon, NY. When asked about his future with AMP1, he replied, "I will continue to offer my support to AMP1 Basketball because they are a great group of guys who for various reasons happen to be amputees. They have huge hearts and the courage to play against able bodies players."
It turns out the apple does not fall far from the tree on the East End of Long Island. Marc's charming and lovely daughter Celia was quick to follow in her father's footsteps. Celia Werner is a junior at Shoreham High School. She is as kind as she is sweet, and is gladly helping to plan for the return of AMP1 to Long Island in March of 2011. Thanks to Celia AMP1 is coming to Shoreham High School.
Practice hard Wildcats. The last time AMP1 was in your neighborhood they took it to the Tuckers in a 49-46 come from behind victory. This team is not to be underestimated.
Great job Marc and Celia! Your efforts are noticed, appreciated, and hopefully replicated.
