How do you know if your motocross knee brace will protect and stabilize your knee joints at the moment you need it most? Just when your foot catches and your leg twists will your brace prevent catastrophic ligament or meniscus injury?
It is difficult to predict just how a knee brace will perform at the moment of impact. But there is one huge determining factor that you as a rider can control. There's an aspect to the mechanism of injury you can control that will give your knees the best chances of surviving all of the twists, bounces, and crashes of Motocross.
The single most important factor is having your knee brace fit by a certified professional who has been educated in orthotic tehcnology and human biomechancis. These people are called orthotists. There is a big difference between an orthotic fitter and a certified orthotist.
Motocross is demanding. Serious riders need to be evaluated, measured, and fit by experienced people. Beware of sales reps posing as credentialled professionals. A person can take a three day course and become a "certified fitter". Motocross riders need to be seen by people who have gone to school for years not days. Only medical professionals who went to school, have participated in orthotic residency programs, and keep up with their continuing education should be treating this class of athlete.
