New from Bird and Cronin - the HKO: Hinged Knee Orthotic. This anterior closure perforated neoprene knee brace is priced right. $34.95. Really? Yes, really.
Covered hinges for sports, open popliteal to eliminate bunching behind the knee, perforated material for breathability....why keep supporting manufacturers that compete against you?
With so many L-Codes and so so many prefabricated back braces, how does a practitioner know what braces will get reimbursed, and what braces will work best for which types of patients?
L-0627 is one of the more common L-Codes for prefabricated back braces. It reads,
"Lumbar orthosis, sagittal control, with rigid anterior and posterior panels, posterior extends from L-1 to L-5 vertebra, produces intracavitary pressure to reduce load on the intervertebral discs, includes straps, closures, may include padding, shoulder straps, pendulous abdomen design, prefabricated, includes fitting and adjustment".
This is a safe L-Code to use for many lower lumbar pathologies. Here is a list of L-0627 back braces. All of the lumbar supports are approved by CMS for L-0627 and have PDAC letters behind them.

Like "peanut butter & jelly" or "orthotics & prosthetics", some things just go together. Townsend Design, an industry leader in the manufacturing of custom and off-the-shelf knee braces, recently announced their partial ownership and full management of BioQuest Prosthetics, the manufacturer of the PerfectStride and BioStride series of prosthetic feet.
Townsend CEO, Rick Riley, will be taking the helm for BioQuest. He is excited about the two companies coming together and the new products in the bags of his sales force. Riley recently said, "...the mechanical platform for the new feet have been developed and tested over the past 18 months...the BioStride series will be stronger, lighter, and more responsive". Three new feet comprising the BioStride series will be released to market this week.
The O&P industry should stop and take notice of the BioQuest and Townsend merger. With new products and a new business model they will take market share from their competitors.
Introducing the Uni-Reliever. Townsend's new single upright knee brace for osteoarthritis. This knee brace is constructed of aircraft aluminum and is indicated for patients with mild to moderate unicompartmental osteoarthritis.
The Uni-Reliever features an adjustable force buttress that provides a comfortable counter-force just above the knee joint. Correction can be adjusted by tightening or loosening the anterior and/or posterior strap.
This knee brace can be ordered as an off-the-shelf model, a custom knee orthotic, or customized from measurements. L-1844 or L-1843 are the codes depending if you go custom or off-the-shelf.
Anti-migration strap padding comes standard on all models. Aluminum shells make it easy to mold in the field, and also make it inexpensive. Try one!
The Duramold custom wrist brace is indicated for patients requiring a high degree of stability. The wrist brace is constructed with moldable volar and palmar inserts. The inserts are easily moldable with a heat gun or hot water. Its lightweight design makes this brace comfortable and effective.
L-3907 is the recommended code. Must order in quantities of 12.
Search products by L-Codes on the Heritage Medical website! Scroll through both orthotic and prosthetic L-Codes and just click. The products approved for the code will be displayed. Order forms, PDAC letters, Fitting Instructions all in one place.
The Orthotic and Prosthetic Assistance Fund (OPAF) and The First
Clinics, along with Winslow Therapeutic Riding Center hosted a
McKeever’s First Ride on Sunday, September 27 at Winslow’s North
American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA) facilities in
Warwick, New York.
Nashville recording artist Templeton Thompson and her husband Sam
Gay opened the afternoon with their music and then introduced event
coordinators from both OPAF and Winslow. Tony Cerminaro, PT, a
transfemoral amputee, gave a barrel-racing demonstration on his horse,
Dusty; and Jodie O’Connell, a below-elbow amputee, talked about
returning to riding just four weeks after surgery and using riding as
part of her rehabilitation. She then gave a demonstration of English
riding and movement. Finally, Paddy Rossbach, former president and CEO
of the Amputee Coalition of America (ACA), gave a presentation of
Americana dressage on her horse Sienna, a 17-year-old Arabian.
According to OPAF, the clinic drew in 16 attendees. “We were close
to our maximum number of attendees to be able to get everyone up and on
horseback,” OPAF said. Participants were guided through activities
including horseback riding, grooming, groundwork in the barns, and arts
and crafts. “Everyone had the chance to ride, including getting the
chance to trot their horse, which included a lead walker as well as two
side walkers for safety,” OPAF noted.
When asked about his experience, Adhiambo Mitchell, a bilateral
transfemoral amputee from New York responded, “It feels like I should
be doing this three times a week!”
This clinic was initiated by John Vacca, who had attended the
inaugural McKeever’s First Ride in Atlanta, Georgia, this summer and
wanted to give a similar experience to people in his area. “John was
instrumental in locating the Winslow facility and in recruitment of
attendees and help with public relations,” OPAF said. “Management and
staff at Winslow were wonderful to work with in all aspects of the
planning of the event and event day.”
According to OPAF, the clinic was underwritten through the
sponsorship of Touch Bionics, Livingston, Scotland; Jack Gold Surgical
Appliances, Randolph, New Jersey; and Heritage Medical, New
York.
