Osteoarthritis Blog deserves recognition.  This blog is helping patients learn about conservative treatment options for knee osteoarthritis.  This blog is interesting to the O&P community because when it comes to knee bracing they only recommend being fit by certified orthotists.  

The blog steers patients away from drugs and surgery and recommends treatment options like weight loss, exercise, and stretching.  Drug companies dominate traditional media.  Medications like Advil, Aleve, Celebrex, Excedrin, and Motrin appear on daily television, radio, and internet ads.  There isn't too much out there about knee bracing.  

Osteoarthritis Blog had over 77,000 hits during the past 8 weeks.  So people with osteoarthritis are out there searching for alternatives.   Worth a look!  

Thought-Controlled Prosthesis!

The AMO Arm (Artificial Muscle-Operated) is a prosthetic arm that is controlled by an amputee's thoughts and powered by compressed air.  No surgery required, users wear a head-band.  It is easy to use and believe it or not, the creators say it's inexpensive as well.

Who invented it?  Thiago Caires and Michal Prywata are undergraduates at Ryerson University in Toronto.  They said the prototype only took about 72 hours to build, but the software to operate it took them an entire year to program.

Amputees will wear a headset that interprets brain signals.  The headset will send instructions wirelessly to the prosthetic arm.  So the user just needs to think, "bend" and the arm will bend. 

The pair of biomedical engineering students are also working on artificial lungs and spinal products.  There is no word yet on when this will be ready for commercial application, or how it will work with traditional prosthetic components.  

Pre-Fabricated Back Brace Education

CMS has instituted rules and regulations surrounding reimbursement in regards to pre-fabricated back braces.  Which lumbar supports need PDAC letters?  What is a back brace's "Reasonable Useful Life"?  Which manufacturers are safe to use?  Which L-code:  L-0627, L-0631, L-0637, L-0639?
